The Key to Autism Is Behind Keisha’s Doors

AUSTIN, TX (August 13, 2005) —“Texas is only out ranked by number one, California, when it comes to children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and New York comes in a close third.  With the rate of children being diagnosed with ASD on the rise, there is a great need that has largely gone unmet for parental education about this mysterious learning disorder,” stated Marvie Ellis, a pediatric speech-language pathologist who provides seminars for professionals and parent trainings in the Austin surrounding area.
Marvie, saw a need and set out to create a very unique series of children’s picture books to help parents and children alike cope with the issues that these types of disorders bring to light.  Her first two books in the series, Keisha’s Doors and Tacos Anyone?, published by Speech Kids Texas Press, Inc. are due out in July 2005, and have received rave reviews from many experts in the field of children’s disabilities.
“The stories are ... clever and intriguing.” wrote Dr. Chris P. Johnson, M. Ed., M.D., member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Children with Disabilities and co-chair of the AAP Autism Expert Panel.
“I appreciated how you described Keisha’s ‘disconnection’… this story is perfect for parents, siblings, and anyone else who needs an understanding of what it’s like as an autistic child and better yet, what we can do to try and enter their world.” reviewed one parent of a child with ASD.
“Each story is written from a child’s point of view in both English and Spanish.  Using culturally diverse characters, each story gives a glimpse of what can take place during a therapy session that is positive and helpful.  The uniqueness of each story is that it actually offers hands-on therapy suggestions that can be used immediately.  It’s like having a free therapy session with each story.”  said Marvie.
