Autism Books Nominated for Dolly Gray Award

Austin, Texas (September 15, 2005)-  Every other year the prestigious Dolly Gray Children’s Developmental Disabilities Literature Award is presented to an outstanding children’s author. Out of many thousands of books released over a two year period, only one is chosen for the award. Marvie Ellis has written a delightful series of books that address disabilities that children may encounter in their daily lives. Her first two books in the series, Keisha’s Doors: An Autism Story Book One and Tacos Anyone? An Autism Story Book Two, were published in July 2005 by Speech Kids Texas Press, Inc, Austin, Texas and have received rave reviews from many experts in the field of children’s disabilities. Both books are nominated for the 2006 Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award.
The Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award is a bi-yearly children’s book award presented to authors who deal with disabilities in a sensitive, appropriate manner. Children have a natural curiosity about others, particularly when there are profound differences involved, and the Dolly Gray award recognizes authors who can create works aiding the understanding of these differences.
Marvie Ellis is a member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, Texas Speech-Language and Hearing Association, and the Autism Society of America, and owns a private pediatric speech-language and occupational therapy practice. With both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in communication, she is eminently qualified to discuss communication issues, and her books help educators, parents and siblings of children with learning disabilities to understand the dynamics of these conditions.
There are countless awards recognizing so many different book qualities that they seem to blend into a bland mix throughout the year.  However, the Dolly Gray award stands apart in that it recognizes the problems with communicating difficult concepts to young children, and supports authors who confront these issues. Congratulations to Marvie Ellis and good luck!
